Enhancing Comfort & Efficiency with Smart LED Lighting Controls

A kitchen in three parts, illuminated by warm LED lighting, paler light, and cool-toned light.

Why A Home Lighting Control System Is Worth the Upgrade

Lightbulbs have largely functioned the same way for nearly one hundred and fifty years—ever since Thomas Edison first invented them. Sure, colored light bulbs emerged, followed by fluorescents and spiral CFLs that use less energy. Still, all lightbulbs worked the same as always—you screwed them in, turned on a light, and that was that.

That is, until the LED light. With LED lighting, suddenly you can remotely control the appearance and atmosphere of your home like a magic spell. LED lights can be intelligently controlled to adjust their brightness and color and can even be managed in groups or as a whole system.

Upgrading your home with an LED lighting control system has proven to enhance both comfort and efficiency in many ways. Read on to find out how.

Why Plug-and-Play Is Not the Way

When you visit hardware stores like Lowes or the Home Depot, you’ll often find DIY smart LED bulbs that you can connect your phone to via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. While these products do offer some color-changing and dimming capabilities, they are far from the best option.

Instead, a lighting control system uses a centralized ‘hub’ that connects to all the LED light fixtures in your house. Whether the lights connect to the system wirelessly or with wires is ultimately up to you. But once your LEDs are integrated with the control system, regardless of their brand, you’ll control them all through one single interface.

You won’t have to switch between different apps or remotes just to adjust the color or brightness. With an integrated lighting control system, you can group lights into rooms and control the entire house simultaneously.

Set the Scene for Comfort

With regular light bulbs, what you buy at the store is what you’re stuck with. But that’s not the case with smart LEDs. A smart lighting system allows you to create and save ‘scenes’ that adjust lights’ color and brightness to cultivate the perfect atmosphere.

Let’s look at the kitchen as an example. In one room, you can utilize many lighting scenes throughout the day, including the following:

  • Cooking: Under-cabinet lights brighten, sconces over the island or table illuminate, and the color temperature sets to a bright white to see clearly.
  • Dinner: Lights dim and adjust to a warm, golden tone. Fixtures over the table illuminate so you can appreciate your meal while other lights turn off, creating a romantic atmosphere.
  • Party: Lights adjust to the perfect tone for socializing, and the linear cabinet lights set to fun colors.
  • Working: Whether you’re cleaning or sitting at the counter with your laptop, lights will lift to a bright, cool white to help you focus.

Scenes can be activated anytime through the system app, handheld remote, voice command, or even wall keypad buttons that replace on/off switches. For instance, press or say “All Off,” and all your LEDs will darken instantly.

Built-In Energy Efficiency

Not only do LED lights use 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs, you can also automate lights to follow your family’s schedules so they always turn off when not needed. LED lights from brands like Ketra, Lutron, and Control4 can be dimmed in precise increments, and by lowering lights slightly, you’ll save extra energy each day. You can enjoy the peace of mind knowing that your house creates less waste—and saves on electricity bills.
