Here are some things to think about as you plan out your media space:

1. Room Size / Location

Sit down and draw a simple sketch of what you want your media room to look like. Consider the size of the room and the layout of your equipment. You’ll also want to think about seating. For media rooms, it’s nice to have seating that can be easily moved around and reconfigured. Since the room serves multiple purposes, there may be times where you want it set up more like theater seating and other times where you’d like to configure the space for conversation or playing games.

The main thing to consider about the location is sound. Media rooms are generally loud, so choosing a place in the house that won’t be too distracting is important. You also want to think about ways to soundproof, like installing sound panels on the walls, carpeting the floor, and using heavy curtains to block out noise.

2. Lighting

Lighting is an important aspect of designing a media room because you want to be able to create a theatrical atmosphere as needed. The best types of lighting to use are ambient and recessed lighting that can be dimmed as needed for the ultimate movie watching or gaming experience.

3. Audiovisual Equipment

One of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make will be about the audiovisual equipment necessary to create the ultimate experience. The main components you’ll want to consider are:

  • Speakers – What kind, how many, and where to put them for best results?
  • Flat screen TV or projector – Which one fits in the space and creates the best cinematic experience.
  • Remote controls – Not only are they useful for your audiovisual equipment and TV, but also consider remotes for dimming/brightening the lights and even connecting to things like your heat and air.
  • Wiring – Figuring out the best way to connect everything without having a mess of wires all over the room.
