You Don’t Need a Dedicated Space for the Home Theater Experience

Create a Versatile Media Room with Home Theater-Level AV

Do you crave the ultra-wide screen, surround sound, and cinematic experience that a home theater provides—but aren’t sure if you have room for a home theater? Or maybe you do have the space yet wonder how often you’ll use a room with only a screen and seating.

There’s a happy medium between dedicated home theaters and a living room setup, and that’s the media room. Perhaps a media room is a better fit for your Highland Park, TX home. You can still enjoy the high-quality audio and video setup you’d find in a home theater installation, but with more flexibility for other activities.

Below we’ll share how you can create a multipurpose media room and what equipment to include. And to learn more about the world of home theaters, subscribe to our monthly newsletter here

Media Rooms: The Best of Both Worlds

Even if the room doesn’t look like a stereotypical home theater, you can still enjoy wall-sized visuals and high-fidelity audio. Maybe you’ll have lounge chairs and a coffee table rather than standard theater seating, and in the back of the room, a high-top table with bar stools.

Perhaps you’ll add a pool or ping pong table into the mix—or an area to play cards while music plays over in-wall speakers. Set up your turntable and record collection, and use the surround sound not just for movies, but your favorite albums, too.

Choosing Your Screen & Sound System

Should you use a TV or projector? That’s the age-old question. For a long time, a projector was the only way you could achieve a theater-sized screen. But with Sony’s new 100-inch TV and microLED screens, you can reach great dimensions on a stunning 4K display. If you go the projector route, laser or LED projectors produce the brightest images so films don’t appear faded or washed out.

On the audio side, you can still create that “theater feeling” with a surround sound system. Speaker brands like Klipsch, Meridian, and Leon deliver robust, detailed sound. With two speakers at the front, two at the side, and a subwoofer, you’ve got a 5.1 system. Add two rear speakers or upward-firing Dolby Atmos speakers for ultimate immersion. Want less clutter? Install in-wall or in-ceiling speakers!

Theater Mode with Lighting & Shading

You can use your media room for any activity—games, reading, drinks, and conversations with friends. Then, when it is time to watch a movie or show, you can set the scene instantly with motorized shades and smart lighting.

On your smart lighting system app, tap “Movie Time,” and blackout shades will automatically lower, eliminating any ambient light. Lights can gradually turn off, leaving on only small pathway lights so you can still navigate the room. When you’re entertaining friends, you can enjoy fun mood lighting on the same smart lights, adjusting the color and brightness from your smartphone or tablet.
