Comparing Low-End vs. High-End LED Smart Lighting

How Good Can Smart Lighting Be?

For anyone that loves new technology or has a passion for interior design, smart lighting control is an exciting new addition to any home. While smart lighting has been eagerly buzzed about in recent years, there’s a wide range of LED lighting products available to choose from.

At the lower end, you’ll find DIY smart bulbs like the Philips Hue models that can be screwed into lamp fixtures and connected to your phone over Wi-Fi. But smart lighting can get much more sophisticated than this, with high-end Ketra lighting fixtures and Lutron systems that offer whole-home control.

If you’re interested in lighting control, you have some options. Are you fine with lower-grade LED solutions or ready for luxury systems like Ketra? We compare both below to help you find the best option.

Low-End, DIY Smart Lights

Off-the-shelf smart bulbs by brands like Philips and Wyze let you change the color of lights from your smartphone and even automate lights to follow a schedule. The color options are impressive, and you can sync lights to home voice assistants.

But these products only work wirelessly, which can be unstable in large homes or require many bridges. Most DIY solutions don’t include wall switches that let you easily adjust light settings across many lights. As it turns out, retrieving your phone to switch light settings is much less practical than quickly tapping a button on the wall.

If all you want is to color-control and automate a few lights in the house, brands like Philips or Wyze do a fine job. But when you want to seamlessly control linear lights, outdoor lights, and the entire house in unison, you’d be more suited to a high-end lighting system Lutron and its Ketra light fixtures.

High-End Smart Lighting Systems

Ketra is the pinnacle of LED smart lights, with fixtures that can be dimmed all the way to 0.1 percent and range from the warmest 1,400 Kelvins to the coolest tones at 10,000 K. Ketra lights are controlled by the wired Lutron HomeWorks system, which ensures lights always respond correctly to your commands. You won’t see Ketra lights ‘popcorn’—turning on one by one, like they often do in low-end systems.

Ketra lights use built-in sensors that compare their color output to the color you requested, automatically adjusting to match. With one wall keypad, you can control an entire room’s lights and activate your favorite settings like “Dinner” and “Party,” custom-engraved into the wall switch. Ketra’s wired system lets you reliably control the entire property without experiencing downtime or unresponsive lights. It just works every time.

When Ketra light fixtures are integrated into a Lutron smart system, you can schedule lights to adjust their colors and brightness to follow your routines. You can also sync the lights to activate alongside motorized shades, smart thermostats, and other home devices.

Many people automate their Ketra lights to replicate natural light inside, with lights appearing cool and bright in the morning and turning warm and cozy by night. Ketra lights are also used in interior design to elevate architecture, art collections, and furniture, so you’ll see your house in an all-new light.
