What Goes Into a Home Theater Design?

A luxury home theater with green velvet seats and LED light strops on the walls.

Our Home Theater Design Process

You know a home theater when you see one. It’s not just a room with a large TV or projector. A home theater is intentionally designed for the cinematic experience, with the entire space geared towards an immersive movie showing.

So how does one design and build a luxury home cinema like the one pictured above? As AV integrators based in Fort Worth, TX, we’ll share our home theater design process here.

First, the Room’s Dimensions

If you’re building a new house, you’re in luck. You can control the theater’s size and location (ideally on the first floor and somewhat secluded). Home theaters should not have windows and should be large enough to accommodate a wall-sized display and a few rows of seats. Rectangular rooms are best for surround sound performance and acoustics, and if you want tiered seating, we’ll plan for elevated floors.

But if you’re working within an existing room, no worries. We know how to treat windows, doors, and smaller spaces to make the audio and video perform brilliantly. The room’s dimensions will affect where seating, audio, and displays will be installed, and we’ll measure the space to find the perfect location for each piece.

Infrastructure and Wiring

Lots of wiring will run through your home theater, connecting speakers, screens, lighting, motorized shades, and more to a centralized control system. We want this to look as seamless and discreet as possible, so optimally, we’ll run data and power wiring behind the walls. Designing the wiring infrastructure and equipment rack is another step in the design process to ensure a well-running and aesthetically pleasing theater.

Curating AV Equipment

After decades of working with home theaters, we know what works best for audio, video, lighting, control, and more. We work with the best brands in the business, including Sonus Faber speakers, Sony, Samsung, and Control4 control systems. We’ll source everything from the projector to the audio amplifier, fitting each piece together to create movie magic.

Just like an interior designer sources unique artwork for their clients, we’ll obtain the best equipment for the home theater to meet your preferences.

Colors, Furniture & Materials

What about the theater’s actual appearance? We work with our clients to order custom seating and can advise on the room’s interior design, too. For example, we typically recommend against bright walls in home theaters to eliminate ambient light. We can also use projector screen fabrics that deflect light to create brighter images. Hidden AV components, like projector and TV lifts, create a clean, minimalistic appearance so you can focus on the room’s interior décor.
