Projector systems have long reigned supreme in home theaters. After all, TVs aren’t large enough to create the cinematic, immersive experience you expect to see in a movie theater. 

That is until recently. Brands like Sony have been manufacturing LED and OLED displays in larger dimensions than ever, now reaching 100 inches wide with the Sony BRAVIA XR X92. At more than eight feet in length, Sony’s 100-inch television can rival the image size of a home theater projector. 

But which should you use in your home theater design—a projector or 100-inch TV? We compare both below to help you find the best choice.

Projectors for Home Theaters 

If you imagine your home theater with a Titanic-sized screen, projectors can cast images from 80 to 150 and even 200 inches wide (over 16 feet!). Projector screen manufacturers like Screen Innovations offer customized dimensions, so you aren’t limited to any size. 

Projectors and screens can also retract and disappear when not in use, which is an attractive feature in multipurpose theater rooms. If you’re short on space, ultra short-throw projectors only need to sit a foot or two away from the wall and will eliminate all eye glare and shadows.

100-Inch TVs for Home Theaters 

In general, TVs are known for their strong high-dynamic range and bright images. Even during the day, a TV screen’s image quality will still look bright and clear despite ambient light in the room. And as we mentioned, Sony’s 100-inch display, the BRAVIA X92, is wide enough to compete with projectors and large enough to qualify as a home theater size. 

The Sony BRAVIA X92 is more than eight feet wide and features 4K upscaling, Dolby Vision, and IMAX Enhanced Mode. It’s a Google TV, which means you can access your favorite apps and content from an intuitive home screen interface. While projectors can reach double the screen size of the BRAVIA X92, if eight feet is plenty for your theater, you’ll be happy with the Sony TV. 

Which Should You Choose? 

So, should you use a TV or projector in your home theater? Ultimately, it’s a personal preference—there are amazing projectors and TV displays that can work in home theaters. If you want the “home theater experience,” we recommend you choose the Sony 100-inch display or a TV screen of least 80 inches or higher. If you want even more of a movie theater sensation, a projector’s vast image size will plunge you right into the action without any glare. 

With the best equipment, you can’t go wrong with either a projector system or 100-inch TV. The choice is up to you!
