It’s essential to find the right location for your extender, too. Don’t place your range extender as far away as possible, nor right next to the router. Somewhere in between is perfect, so that you’re able to spread a signal with optimal speed.

Consider Replacing the Router 

The new standard for Wi-Fi is called 802.11n. If you’re running on 802.11b or g, it may be time to upgrade your router altogether. Find a router that operates on two channels, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, so that you can switch back and forth when one becomes congested. 2.4 GHz signals travel farther than 5 GHz but are susceptible to interference from appliances like microwaves, landline phones, and vacuum cleaners. So maybe leave your router out of the kitchen!

Upgrade the Firmware 

Your router’s firmware is essentially the operating system that your network lives on. Updating the firmware can improve security, correct bugs, and in some cases, enhance the router’s performance. Unfortunately, the download process can be complicated. You’ll need first to find the setup screen, which you may find in either the manual or by searching online for the router and sign-in.
