Ways to Improve Your Internet Connection

Whether your home is fully equipped with surveillance cameras and whole-home audio or if you’re simply trying to email from your laptop across the house, you need a reliable and reliable network. Too many of us deal with unstable connections, forcing us to restart our routers every few weeks. Slow connection speeds make downloading and streaming lag, and in certain rooms of our house, we may not be able to get a signal at all. Sound familiar?

Setting up the ideal home network is not easy, but there are several ways you can make it less aggravating. But with the following tips, your home network installation should have your Highland Park, TX home connected in no time.

Find the Right Spot for Your Router

You may be surprised to hear that the placement of your router is detrimental to its performance. Ideally, the router should be out in the open to maximize coverage, and at best placed in the center of your home. That may not be easy to achieve, especially if your coaxial or phone cable is located on the side of the house, likely close to the street. If you can’t place the router in the center of your home, refrain from stowing it in a closet or cupboard. A router may not match your interior décor, but barriers and walls can harm your connection.

Add Range Extenders

If your connection is still patchy, your next best bet is to acquire a range extender. An extender is a device that increases the reach of your home’s Wi-Fi signal. It’s essential to find the right location for your extender, too. Don’t place your range extender as far away as possible, nor right next to the router. Somewhere in between is perfect, so that you’re able to spread a signal with optimal speed.

Consider Replacing the Router

The new standard for Wi-Fi is called 802.11n. If you’re running on 802.11b or g, it may be time to upgrade your router altogether. Find a router that operates on two channels, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, so that you can switch back and forth when one becomes congested. 2.4 GHz signals travel farther than 5 GHz but are susceptible to interference from appliances like microwaves, landline phones, and vacuum cleaners. So maybe leave your router out of the kitchen!

Upgrade the Firmware

Your router’s firmware is essentially the operating system that your network lives on. Updating the firmware can improve security, correct bugs, and in some cases, enhance the router’s performance. Unfortunately, the download process can be complicated. You’ll need first to find the setup screen, which you may find in either the manual or by searching online for the router and sign-in. Once there, you’ll have to download the software and manually install it. If this sounds like a headache, Texadia Systems can handle all of this for you.
