Professional Sound at Home: The Legacy of JBL Speakers

JBL high-end speakers in a loft room with tall ceilings and a brick wall.

How to Build Stereo & Whole-Home Systems with the Legendary JBL

JBL’s best-sellers may be their portable speakers, but you can also find their audio equipment in music studios, recording rigs, and other professional music settings. Their loudspeakers were even used at the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969, blasting Jimi Hendrix and The Who to 400,000 people.

JBL has been an audio pioneer for over 70 years, manufacturing high-end speakers that deliver the highly accurate sound music professionals need. But even if you aren’t a music producer, you deserve to enjoy robust, high-quality audio in the comfort of your home. And you can, with help from JBL!

Whether you’re looking for the perfect pair of speakers for your turntable or are ready to finally install whole-home audio, read on to learn how JBL’s high-end speakers work and which models to choose for your University Park, TX home.

How to Build a Home Audio System

Speakers come in two forms: powered or passive. “Powered” speakers are like the portable handheld speakers you may already own. They don’t need any other components; just turn them on and press “Play” on your music source. “Passive” speakers, on the other hand, need to be wired to an amplifier or receiver to receive their power. While that may sound less convenient, passive speakers produce higher-quality audio with more details and bass sounds, thanks to their larger drivers.

To build a hi-fi stereo system, you’ll need three components: speakers, an amp or receiver, and audio sources. In stereo setups, we recommend at least two speakers for left and right channels. But if you’re building a surround sound or whole-home system, incorporate as many speakers as you’d like! Music sources can include record players, CD players, wireless streaming from your phone, TV audio, radio, and more—all connected to the amp/receiver.

Choosing the Right JBL Speakers for You

JBL offers a wide variety of home audio speakers. For the most power, consider their floorstanding loudspeakers that deliver high and low sound frequencies with impeccable detail. If you still want that musical “oomf” in a smaller size, JBL’s bookshelf speakers can make a perfect stereo set.

Want something a little more discreet? JBL also manufactures in-wall architectural speakers that blend into your home’s interior. Architectural speakers are a great choice for multi-room systems that are heard but not seen.

Installing a home sound system does require great effort and home improvement skills. If you need assistance, a home technology integrator like our team at Texadia Systems is here to help.

Speaker Placement for Perfect Sound

Setting up the speakers is only half the equation. Where you place audio equipment can enhance (or tarnish) the sound experience, too. That’s because a room’s length and acoustics cause sound waves to bounce off walls, leading to echoes and distortion.

In rectangular rooms, place your speakers on the shortest wall possible and at least one meter away from other walls. Think of your rooms in thirds, and place your stereo speakers in the first third of the room. For enhanced listening, try to place speakers at ear level, or at least higher than a meter. Surround sound speaker placement is its own science; for optimal home theater installations, we recommend consulting the professionals!
