The Limitations of DIY Smart Lighting 

What do we mean by DIY? We’re talking about Wi-Fi-enabled LEDs that don’t use a control system or hub but instead connect individually to a phone app or remote. While off-the-shelf smart bulbs are incredibly easy to install yourself, your options will be much more limited than a centralized lighting system.  

For example, if you want to sync lights across the house and program automated scenes like “Morning,” it will require complex programming. Also, store-bought systems aren’t that sophisticated. True smart systems allow you to sync smart lights with other technology, like thermostats, motorized shades, audio, and security devices. With DIY solutions, there’s no way to integrate third-party devices to work together. 

DIY also limits how you can control LED bulbs. For instance, if you purchase a Philips Hue smart bulb from The Home Depot, the only way you’ll be able to activate and adjust the lights is from your phone on the home Wi-Fi.
