The Limitations of DIY Smart Lighting 

What do we mean by DIY? We’re talking about Wi-Fi-enabled LEDs that don’t use a control system or hub but instead connect individually to a phone app or remote. While off-the-shelf smart bulbs are incredibly easy to install yourself, your options will be much more limited than a centralized lighting system.  

For example, if you want to sync lights across the house and program automated scenes like “Morning,” it will require complex programming. Also, store-bought systems aren’t that sophisticated. True smart systems allow you to sync smart lights with other technology, like thermostats, motorized shades, audio, and security devices. DIY also limits how you can control LED bulbs.
