What Is Warm Dimming?

When you think of restaurants with “mood lighting,” you’ll likely imagine dim lamps or tabletop candles. These lights won’t appear cool-white but rather warm and golden. Humans naturally anticipate low-lighting to be warm-colored, like a cozy campfire or sunset.

The same idea can be applied to LED lighting. An LED lighting system with warm dimming will gradually transition the lights from a blue-white tint during the day to a cozy, amber hue in the evening. As you lower the lights’ brightness level, the color temperature will lower and appear warm, too. Warm dimming is not about actual heat, but instead, refers to the warmer tones in a smart bulb.

What Are the Benefits of Warm Dim Lighting?

The sky naturally warms throughout the day, appearing soft and golden at sunset before ultimately going dark. Natural light is a major influence over our circadian rhythm, and if we’re always living under bright artificial light, it can disturb our sleep patterns and moods.

Warm dim lighting in the late afternoon and evening soothes our minds, eyes, and prepares us for bedtime. Evening lighting cues our brains to naturally produce melatonin, helping us sleep more soundly and live more productive lives. Plus, warm dim lighting looks cozier and more inviting in your home.

How Do I Get Warm Dimming?

Warm lighting has historically been a challenge for LED light bulbs. But today, smart lighting systems allow homeowners to fine-tune and customize their lights’ appearance and even schedule them to automatically warm and dim in the evening.

Ketra offers more color possibilities than any other lighting solution, letting lights warm dim all the way to 1,400 Kelvins and lower. That’s quite warm!
