Zoom or Teams? How to Use Both with Conference Room Technology
Bring Flexibility to Your Conference Rooms with BYOM
In the new landscape of hybrid work, conferencing setups like Zoom Rooms and Teams Rooms are bridging the gap between remote and in-person meetings. Now, the entire conference table can participate in virtual discussions, seeing and hearing their remote colleagues while being captured on a wide-angle camera and HD microphones.
But there’s one issue with brand-centric conferencing systems. What happens if your staff uses Microsoft Teams, but you’re trying to join a client’s meeting link on Zoom?
Incompatible conferencing software has been a head-scratcher for all businesses. But now, there’s a new solution. Using “BYOM” (bring your own meeting) techniques, your conference room technology lets meetings be ‘agnostic’ about which platform to use over conferencing hardware.

What’s BYOD and BYOM?
We aren’t suggesting “bring your own drink” or “bring your own dog” to the conference room. “Bring your own device” means that over a wireless presentation system, staff can bring their own laptop or tablet and connect it to the main conferencing display. Whatever’s on their screen can be instantly sent to the room’s screen, speakers, microphones, and camera.
BYOM, or “bring your own meeting” takes this a step further by allowing staff to join whatever communication platform they please on the conferencing system. You’re no longer limited to a Zoom Room or Teams Room—a BYOM room allows you to use both Zoom, Teams, and whatever video conferencing software you prefer. There are different ways to achieve this, both wired or wirelessly, and the best approach will depend on your current network and needs.
How We Build BYOM Conference Rooms
In ‘agnostic’ meeting rooms, we install HD video displays, speakers, microphones, and cameras that all work in tandem. We then install HDMI and USB cables that will run up through the table so that staff can connect their personal devices to the room. With one press of a button, they can share any video meeting to the room’s AV, whether it’s on Zoom, Teams, Webex, Google Meet, Ring Central, etc. With “BYOM,” participants use the UCC solutions they’re comfortable with, and can even switch rooms while continuing the same call.
Wireless BYOM
Wireless sharing sounds ideal, but it can cause choppy video if your office network doesn’t have enough bandwidth. But if you’d prefer to do away with dongles and cables, The Solstice Pod by Mersive is a wireless presentation hardware and software that lets your team join your preferred meeting platforms on the same conferencing hardware. If someone sends your team a Zoom link when you use Teams, it’s no sweat to share it on the display. You must be on the same Wi-Fi as the Pod to connect, and we recommend upgrading your network to ensure it can handle wireless sharing.
